BLOG: Anthony Gomes soars near his hometown, for a rare Ont. visit 2019!

June 3, 2019 Live Music No Comments

Anthony Gomes is many things rolled into 1 package. He is a son, brother, History scholar, nominated author, multi-award winning Top 10 World Guitarist, #1 Billboard’s Blues Artist who is also the European Blues Awarded Best Musician/Live Performance Winner.

The way he makes love to his guitars making them sing while setting stages ablaze is priceless. This stellar 2 set show was hypnotic as Anthony and both Jeremy Whoodie Howard on drums and Sean Holland on bass took you on a roller coaster adventure thru the Blues in the 1st Degree.

If you like fuel injected blues rock infusion, then an Anthony Gomes showcase with fill that hunger and quench your musical thirst. This is no ordinary chord striking guitar player, no siree. Anthony is a hard working, dedicated Canadian treasure and a world-wide house hold name opening over the years for legends Buddy Guy, Robert Plant, Joe Bonamassa, Heart, Jonny Lang, Sammy Hagar, 38 Special, Robert Cray, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Gretchen Wilson and for his mentor-B.B. King.

I reflect back to my interview with Anthony back March 19, 2016. “A very talented guitarist….where did that voice come from”  BB King

Q) Anthony what does it feel like to be acknowledged by the King of the Blues?
A) “It’s pretty surreal. BB gave me my start in so many ways.  Interestingly enough I went to college at University of Toronto, downtown.  On Thursday nights on Queen Street West, there was a bar called Chicago’s, it’s not there anymore, sort of near the Black Bull in that area but, on the other side of the street and there was a Thursday night jam.  Chicago’s was a small room maybe you could get 60 people upstairs and it was filled, you know this was 20-25 years ago, so Queen Street was maybe even less hip then it is now and a lot more colorful.  There was a bunch in there and I would play and they would give me a beer for playing and sometimes they would give me 2 free beers and that was like a million dollars when you were in college, so I would go and sit in and I would play. This gentlemen came up to me and said, “It is great that a young man is so into the Blues, who’s your favorite guitar player? “ I (Anthony) said, “oh that is easy, BB King”.   Gentlemen said, “ I thought so, I want you to know that I am BB King’s bus driver, and he’s performing tomorrow in Kitchener, and I want you to come to the show and meet BB King”.   Now, you have to realize that when I arrived, BB was sitting next to the Pope and next to President of the United States.  I had no idea if this gentleman was actually lying or off his rocker, but, he was telling the truth and low and behold, I met BB and he was a wonderful mentor.  I had a lot of opportunities to play with him and he wasn’t just kind to me, he was kind to everybody and he was a wonderful ambassador for the Blues.  He said a lot of great things about a lot of beautiful people, and I am just happy to be included in that list. ”

Well, Toronto born blues-rock superstar Anthony Gomes has toured 17 countries, yet, still found time to include a SOLD OUT visit to The Music by The Bay Concert Series at Port Whitby Marina on Lake Ontario as part of his only 4 Canadian dates. Anthony welcomed the sea of fans saying,

Anthony Gomes Sr and Jr.

“It’s great to be here in Canada, proud that my dad and brother are here tonight!” This full house show was an intimate, an up close and personal addition to his 80% sold-out show dates upon his worldwide 2019 tour.  His performance was truly rejuvenating, a work of instrumental genius that profoundly resonated long after the show ceased, a love to last the ages if you will. Canada’s blues virtuoso delighted fans with invigorating sets of originals from the last 20 years of his outstanding career including songs from his 13th most recent album-Peace, Love & Loud Guitars (2018).

Cranking hit after hit including Nasty Good, (currently #1 at Radio) Your Momma Wants to Do Me (and Your Daddy Wants to Do Me In), I Don’t Know Much About Love (intimate audience acapella), Purple Whiskey Sack, Blues In The First Degree, Take Me Back Home, Voodoo Child, Whiskey Train and Turn It Up completed the 1st set. “My goal is to keep the Blues fresh, exciting and even dangerous, I want to bring back the thrill longtime Bluesmen created in their day. At the same time, I think it’s very important for the music to grow and evolve,” says Anthony Gomes. COME DOWN, kicked the 2nd set into overdrive followed by Back Door Scratchin, White Trash Princess, Room 414, Peace Love, and Loud Guitars, and Darkest Before The Dawn. Anthony’s favorite artist is Otis Redding and watching Anthony nail his version of Bring It On Home To Me (written by Sam Cook and made famous by Otis Redding) was simply priceless; totally knocking it out of the park with his gritty and engaging rendition. Fans pulled Anthony back on stage for his encore and it sure was scorching hot featuring Anthony’s creative cover medley switching from Rainbow’s hit Man on The Silver Mountain into Kiss’s I Was Made For Lovin’ You and back again.

What I have noticed during his shows, when he’s in the zone, inside himself and his tunes, he expresses a sexy, epic and emotional portrayal of his heart and soul. Keep on Keeping on Anthony and thanks for the musical inspiration! www.anthonygomes.com
