Toronto five-piece and indie-rock outfit, Long Range Hustle, coming to Tweed May 6 and Bancroft May 7, as they release a new album, I Am Alive, But Only If You Say I Am.
Toronto five-piece and indie-rock outfit, Long Range Hustle, who have just released their new album, I am alive, but only if you say I am, will be playing in Tweed (May 6) at the Marble Arts Centre and in Bancroft (May 7) at the Bancroft Village Playhouse as a part of their Canada/USA album tour.
Their 10-track record is jam-packed with melodic earworms and thought-provoking lyrics that explore themes of self-reflection, human connection, and vulnerability in a time when it’s needed most. Produced virtually from Scotland by Tony Doogan (Hey Rosetta!, Wintersleep), the album was recorded during the summer of 2020 at Kingston’s Bathouse studio, where, isolated from the rest of the world, Long Range Hustle was able to take the time to disassemble and assess every little detail of instrumentation and arrangement for the record.
The lead single from the album, Election Night, is both a sonic and cinematic masterpiece, Half-Speed was included in Indie 88’s Your First Listen: 13 songs you need to discover this week, while other singles Comeback Kid, American Cash, Wait Up For Me, Beeswax, Used To Call and Love Yourself also appear on the album, having received play on CBC shows, Here & Now, Fresh Air, In The Key of C, and All In A Day.

“Known for their commanding arena-sized sound, the five-piece find a compelling middle ground on the new single (Half Speed), as they balance longing nostalgia
with an uplifting, heartfelt melody.” – Dusty Organ
“… the album’s earnest posture is undeniable but, on that same first listen, each of those ten songs register very well in the running and listeners will find that they’re hooked early before being pulled along happily by what they hear… a series of really good songs. It might sound odd, but that’s rare – and exciting, in its own way.” – Ground Control Magazine
Today, Toronto five-piece indie-rock outfit, Long Range Hustle, release their long awaited and much anticipated new album, I am alive, but only if you say I am [Sans Shoes (Canada), AntiFragile Music (Rest Of World)]. The 10-track record is jam packed with melodic earworms and thought-provoking lyrics that explore themes of self-reflection, human connection, and vulnerability in a time when it’s needed most. Produced virtually from Scotland by Tony Doogan (Hey Rosetta!, Wintersleep), the album is available to purchase and stream everywhere now.
“No one lives in a vacuum,” says the band’s, Paul Brogee, on the album. “We are all products of our communities, and of our interactions within them. This new album is a deeply personal one, exploring how (for good or ill) our own visions of ourselves are so frequently defined by our connections to others.“
“The stories told are framed by our interactions with others, or lack-there-of. There are difficult late-night conversations, persistent imaginary friends, vacant living rooms, locked doors, and ex-lovers seen in new colours through the lens of a camera. As each song works towards its climax, it also works towards vulnerability and clarity. And this is where you come in. For the music only exists when it is listened to. The stories only matter when they are heard. Like it says on the front of the album… I am alive, but only if you say I am.”
The accompanying album standout track, Election Night, is all about the price of ambition and dedication. It follows a politician and his wife as his campaign reaches the finish line. It is a story about two people who realize that their lives and priorities are simply incompatible. The music video follows this young couple’s journey, as their relationship crumbles under the weight of ambition.
“It is certainly the most ambitious video project we’ve attempted to date,” reflects the band. “With AJ (drummer/director/editor) working with cinematographer, Jack Hawley, they really created a visually striking and emotionally moving piece to recreate, very faithfully, the song’s narrative.”
